Some things you can’t explain and this screenshot from one of the maidens fits nicely into that category.  Maiden Kerala was able to explain it though.

“We were traveling to Helgen eager to see if the rumors were true about the dragon attack. Why I let Laast talk me into such a dangerous journey is beyond me. Must of been too much Firebrand wine. Laast kept saying to follow the light until we got close and I heard Laast scream, “I’m not sticking around to fight a dragon!” and disappear into complete darkness.”
